A First Timer's Tulum Experience
I decided to put together a little recap and guide of our Tulum experience! Ryan and I took our first trip alone together this year to Tulum, Mexico. We have heard many good things about this town and decided to book our tickets for a getaway. I put together a list of places that we went to and a few tips that might help you if you are going to or plan on going to Tulum.
Getting there: We went in the end of August which is low season for Mexico so it was not crowded and the flights were very cheap from Fort Lauderdale Airport. We flew directly into Cancun Airport and booked a car service ahead of time through Viator which turned out to be incredibly easy and comfortable. They picked us up right outside of the airport and it was about hour and a half ride from there to the hotel.

Our Hotel: We chose to stay at Mi Amor Hotel and it was the best choice of the whole trip! It is a small boutique hotel with only 18 rooms. We stayed in a pool view room that actually had a small view of the ocean as well. It was not all inclusive but had an amazing breakfast included that we had every morning. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone that wants a relaxing and romantic stay.

Where to Eat: Before going to Tulum I had a very long list of restaurant recommendations from other guides and friends that I have been before. We tried not to plan out too much and book reservations so we could just see where the day took us. For lunch, our favorite place that we went was a very local restaurant in town called El Capitan. They had the best ceviche and shrimp tacos and the prices were incredible. For dinner, we loved our experience at Rosa Negra. The service was very good and the food was even better!
A few other places that we loved:
- Raw Love - lunch spot, great for açaí bowls and smoothies
- La Eufamia - great tacos and live music at night
- Don Honorio - very local but amazing
- Kitchen Table - outdoor restaurant with incredible food
- Mezzanine - delicious thai food
Where to Drink: We would go out for a couple drinks after dinner every night. It led us to explore some awesome places and craft cocktails. Our favorite places that had a great atmosphere and drinks were:
- Casa Jaguar
- Papaya Playa Project
- Batey's Mojito Bar
Where to Explore: I think the best way to get around Tulum is to rent a scooter or bike. We loved having the ability to go easily from the hotel anywhere in town or on the main road without calling a taxi. The bike service that we used was through our hotel and is was called iBike.
Tulum is famous for its gorgeous cenotes so we made sure to visit a few while we were there. We went one hidden one on the main road and then went to a more popular one called Gran Cenote. A tip for the cenotes is to get there really early in the morning before the bus loads of tourists arrive. They are definitely something that you need to see and experience!
A few other spots that we enjoyed were Casa Malca, a hotel that was originally Pablo Escobar's mansion. We also went into the main town for more affordable shopping and to experience the markets.
Overall, our trip was this best combination of adventure and relaxation. We would definitely go back to Tulum in the future!
